Editor/12-27-2012

    2012 DEEP SOUTH BAYOU DUALS

Forty-four teams will converge on the Baton Rouge River Center on Friday for the 2012 Deep South Bayou Duals.  Louisiana's top Division I schools will be there, as will the defending Division II state champion Teurlings Catholic Rebels and the defending Division III state champion Brusly Panthers, who will also be the host school for the tournament.

Twenty-one of the teams are from Louisiana.  Six are from Florida and four are from Alabama, including last year's champions from Thompson, AL.  Four are coming from Tennessee, three from Texas, and Oklahoma will have two teams.  Two teams, albeit both from Phoenix High School, are coming all the way from New York.  One team will be from Georgia and one more from Missouri.

The Louisiana favorite is Brother Martin, who is 11-0 in dual meets in Louisiana and Texas.  Last year's champion from Thompson will be joined by the runner-up from Jefferson, Missouri.  Brother Martin and Catholic tied for third in 2011.

This year's tournament will be held at the Baton Rouge River Center, located at 275 South River Road in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 70802.

Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, with the finals scheduled for Saturday at 3:30 p.m.  Admission is free.

  Brother Martin, Louisiana
The Crusaders are 11-0 in dual meets in Louisiana and Texas and have placed 1st or 2nd (only out-of-state) in every tournament in which they have participated.  The defending Division I state champions are one of the strongest Louisiana teams in years.  The Crusaders scored a record 909 points with seven champions at the Trey Culotta Invitational.
  Collierville, Tennessee
Collierville's two losses in their 11-2 dual meet record came at the hands of nationally ranked Christian Brothers, the same Tennessee team that beat Brother Martin in the Blackhorse Invitational.  Billy Rainey (19-5 at 120), Zac Sumner (17-5 at 120), Matthew Richardson (17-6 at 138) and heavyweight Tres Ring (18-7) lead the Dragons.
  Thompson, Alabama
The Indians have a formidable 25-11 dual meet mark. Senior Jacks Reed is 19-0 at 120.  Jaden Hunter has two losses and 21 wins at 126, and Haynes Demario is 23-2 at 132.  Also at 126 is Tyler Lacey at 18-3.  Four other Indian wrestlers have only four losses versus more than 15 wins apiece.
  Rummel, Louisiana
The Raiders' Rick LaCava (132) is undefeated and Tyler Frame has only two losses at 145.  They are led by two-time defending Division I state champion Matt Calcote (126) who has only one loss.  Rummel has a full squad now after their team won the Louisiana AAAAA state championship.
  Teurlings Catholic, Louisiana
The defending Division II state champions lost three state champions to graduation but have one left in Nick Schneider, who is 17-2 at 182.  The Rebels are 8-3 in dual meets, with their three losses coming from the top three Division I teams in 2012's state championships.  Travis Thibodeaux is 19-1 and Travis Santiago is 13-2 for the Rebels.
  Comeaux, Louisiana
Comeaux is led by returning Division I state champions Jacob Dale (120) and Tyrek Malveaux (152).  Abram Sellers (138), Jacob Guillory (126), Connor Stampley (113)  and Matthew Tillman (11-0 at 182) are also having good seasons for the Spartans.
  Jesuit, Louisiana
Senior Mitch Capella (113) has only two losses which both occurred to out-of-state wrestlers at the Mid-American Tournament in Tulsa.  Manny Armour's two losses at 195 were also in Tulsa.  Nicky Charles (106), Efoisa Eboigbe (145), Gaston Eymard (152) and Gage Grush (182) are having strong seasons for the Blue Jays.
   Fontainebleau, Louisiana
For the most part the Bulldogs are a young team.  Nine of the fourteen starters are freshmen or sophomores.  Gabe Geer (132) has led the team on and off the mat.  The Bulldogs are particularly strong in the heavier weight classes with Ethan Eisenhardt (182), Daniel Priola (195) Garrett Kugelmann (220) and Christian Ponson (285).
  Auburn, Alabama
Coach Nick Tucker has six state qualifiers on his team led by senior Cody Lane (17-1 at 145) who placed 4th at the state tournament in 2012.  Their 8-5 dual meet record is deceptive as most of their losses occurred before their football players rejoined the team.
  St. Paul's, Louisiana
Connor Campo (132) and David Englehardt (145) are returning Division I state champions and are undefeated in 2012.  Dominic Iovenetti (152), Chris Meraux (120), Jordan Peterson (160) and Quinn Perret (126) are all having good seasons.
   Sulphur, Louisiana
The Golden Tornado is led by senior Josh Crochet (6-1 at 150) and sophomore Trey Duhon (5-3 at 132), who placed 1st and 2nd in the district championships.  District champion Brennan Taylor* is a freshman who is 9-1 at 120..
  South Walton, Florida
South Walton is making their second trip to Louisiana this year.  Sophomore Cody Pickrin (126) was a finalist at the Trygg and recently placed 3rd at the Capital City Classic in Tallahassee.
  Catholic, Louisiana
Catholic's returning Division I state champion Brandon Luckett won the Outstanding Wrestler Award at the Trey Culotta Invitational.  The Bears also had a champion in undefeated James Claitor (138) and runners-up in Brennan Taylor* (126) and Matthew Mire (132).

   Clear Falls, Texas
Clear Falls will be the ones yelling "SQUEEZE" all tournament long.  This is their first team with seniors and they have already qualified for the Texas state duals championship with a 14-2 record.  They are led by Garrett Hill (132), Andrew Overstreet (145), Jonathan Lowery (172) and Zach Fattig (285).

  Live Oak, Louisiana
The Eagles are led by junior Division II state champion Cody Hill (126) who has defeated every known contender this season.  Not infallible, he has lost twice to one opponent, but has also beaten that opponent four times.  Opponents should also take note of Jacob Chenevert (113), Colt Olinde (106), Dean Roberts (132), Seth Bosarge (138) and Brody Bonura (182).
  Brusly, Louisiana
The host and defending Division III Panthers have returning state champions in Baret Sanchez (120) and Trevor Schermer (132).  The Panthers placed 6th at the Griffin, 4th at the Sam Sara and recently gained experience at the Beast of the Beach duals tournament Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
  Gulf Breeze, Florida
The Dolphins have a 5-3 dual meet record and undefeated wrestlers in senior Beau Doerr (9-0 at 138) and  his sophomore brother Blake (9-0 at 132).  Evan Ogden is 7-1 at 195, Nick Staviski is 7-2 at 120 and Greg Manfredi is 7-2 at 126.
  Houston Westside, Texas
Neiman Mitchell at 106 is a returning state qualifier and is currently 21-0. He has won The Rumble at The Rock tournament in Rockwall, TX and The Classic at Cy Ridge in Houston, TX (OW of tournament).  Neiman has only been taken down 1 time this year and went 20 matches in a row without allowing a takedown.
  Platte County, Missouri
At 106 freshman Matthew Schmitt was a Double Cadet All-American this past summer.  Junior Matthew Barmann is a returning state medalist (4th @ 106 in 2012) as is senior Collin Tolliver (6th - 106 - 2010)
   Airline, Louisiana
Sophomore Scott Prouty is 12-1 for the Vikings at 126.  Cody Rhymes is 8-4 at 120, Sam Lites is 9-2 at 170 and Pablo Marroquin is 9-2 at 145 to name a few of the Vikings' weapons.
  Baton Rouge, Louisiana
The Bulldogs are young but have a new coach in Bill Bofinger.  They are led by sophomore Nijahi Butler, who is 11-8 at 152, and freshman Eric David (14-8 at 113).
  St. Louis, Louisiana
At 160 defending Division II state champion Louis Stutes is 20-1.  Conrad LeBleu (170) is 13-2.  Junior Robert McPherson is 11-1 for the Saints.
  Mandeville, Louisiana
Nick des Bordes (106) and Garrin Pellegrin (132) are St. Tammany Parish champions while Lucky Prosper (113) and Noah Landry (126) placed 5th at state in 2012 and 2011, respectively.
   Lafayette, Louisiana
Lafayette is led by seniors Hunter Taylor (21-2 @ 113) and Michael Daiy (22-3 @ 182).  Adrian Ducote (25-6 @132) is also wrestling well for the Lions.
  East Ascension, Louisiana
Alex Betteridge (106) and Michael Bernard (145) were finalists at last week's Trey Culotta Invitational and Jacob Bernard (113) placed third.
  Grissom, Alabama
Grissom is 6-4 in dual meets.  Seniors Kyle Miller (13-2 at 170), David Baumohl (16-4 at 152) and sophomore Trevor Edwards (11-4 at 145) lead the Tigers.
  Sam Houston, Louisiana
The Broncos have a young program but had district champions in Andrew Aucoin (120) and Cameron Ferguson (285), placing fifth.
  Dutchtown, Louisiana
Brandon Cowell (22-4 at 145) and Kevin Chester (18-7) lead the Griffins along with Brandon Thongsavanh (17-10 at 220).
   Zachary, Louisiana
Jared Durr is 6-1 for the Broncos at 170 and Daniel Rittell is 9-2 at 170.  Heavyweight Ty Simpson is always dangerous.  Only three Broncos are seniors.
  St. Amant, Louisiana
Senior Kade Siears leads an otherwise very young Gators team with a 13-11 record at 138 lbs.
  Arlington, Tennessee
Arlington's dual meet record is 11-5.  John Craft (120) and Cameron Hall (126) are 10-2 on the season.

Suffice to say that Phoenix should be very strong if they can bring a second team to the event.
  Spain Park, Alabama

   MacArthur, Oklahoma
